Why don't they talk about her? 33 years after the first kill.

Okay, we've probably all heard of the Dawn Brancheau's death at SeaWorld in 2010. Right? What if I told you almost 20 years prior there was another girl killed by Tilikum. Her name was Keltie Byrne. Born in the December of 1970 and was brutally attacked by Tilikum on February 2nd, 1991. Maybe some of you have heard of her, but many of you I know haven't.

When looking at almost every article about Tilikum, it mentions Brancheau and her death. I am aware that was the main kill, and my condolences go out to her family, but this wasn't the case when people didn't fuss over Byrne's death. When it was the start of 3 of 4 deaths by a captive orca.

Going back to Keltie's story, she was looking to earn some extra money, so she worked at Canada's SeaLand. Not related to Seaworld. Byrne's shift was going relatively well, when she accidently slipped from the rubber boots, she was wearing and fell into the water. When just about to get out, Tilikum had grabbed her leg and pulled her under. It was marked as trainer accident. A simple accidental dip in the water cost her a life. She was 20 years old; her life had barely started.

This case was well before my time, but learning about what had happened has shook me to my core.

The coroner had stated that 'Rescue attempts were thwarted by the whales;' nobody could have saved her. Many witnesses report hearing her scream 'Help me!' during the attack from Tilikum, Haida II and Nootka IV. The two female orcas, Haida and Nootka, made a waves around Tilikum when the attack was going on. He had instigated the attack. After watching the Documentary Blackfish, it had shown that Tilikum was agitated due to being 'raked' by the other orcas. Raking is the sense of an orca 'raking' or combing it's teeth over one another. This is a sign of a power dynamic, which was Nootka and Haida trying to be shown as dominant over Tilikum. Many say this is why he attacked. I believe it was instincts.

Caging an animal with the common name 'Killer Whale' is bound to have something bad happen. So, why did it have to be Keltie that suffered from somebody else's mistake.

Many people forget that it was Tilikum who killed Keltie. She was the first, a horrible case, why isn't it Keltie who is spoken about?
